May 16th 2000,
Dear Alumni Member,
The Student Rugby League is currently planning the most ambitious Tour Programme ever. In September we will be sending the Great Britain & Ireland Squad to take on New Zealand (the current World Champions) and Australia (the Ashes holders). This is daunting enough but we are also sending the "Emerging" Great Britain & Ireland Squad to tour the USA as it provides excellent preparation for later major competitions.
In order to achieve these two adventures we need to raise some serious cash and that is where you come into the equation. We are organising three main events and you can get involved in them all.
1. The Grand Draw Tickets are priced at £100 each and are very limited. We are hoping to sell them to companies and organisations as the first prize is Sponsorship of the Great Britain & Ireland Squad to tour New Zealand & Australia. This will include branding, hospitality and some advertising as well as promotional work by the players etc. Second Prize will be Sponsorship of the "Emerging" Squad, third prize will be tracksuit sponsorship and the fourth and fifth prizes are sleeve sponsorships. Everyone who buys a ticket will get 4 hospitality tickets to the Draw, which takes place at the Home nations Championship Final on July 1st 2000 and also we will list them as supporters in adverts in both the Rugby Leaguer and the League Express. We are, therefore, able to offer an invoice for advertising and hospitality. I would be grateful if you could try to sell at least one ticket to a Company and complete the form at the bottom of this letter to let me know where to send the draw tickets and also the invoice.
2. Sponsorsed Bike Ride Stuart Stanton, who has helped out with the Wales Students for many years and is, in fact, a founder of the UWIC Club, will cycle around every Super League Club in the country over the weekend June 2nd to 4th 2000. We are trying to get him sponsored for as much as possible so please give generously. Cheques, however large or small will be gratefully received and should be made payable to "Student Rugby League". You will be able to follow Stuarts progress on SKY SPORTS Rugby League coverage that weekend.
3. Academic Lions Dinner This will be held at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday july 15th 2000. It will be a chance for former Student Internationals to get together socially and to help the current crop of talented players. We would hope to make this an Annual event and we are considering creating a "Hall of Fame" of Student Internationals who have gone on to achieve great things either within the sport or elsewhere. Please feel free to make nominations. Tickets for the Dinner will be £25:00 and will include a speaker from the world of Rugby League.
Thanks for your time and I hope that you will be able to help on some or all of the above efforts. Students find it very hard to access any grants to help them with their sporting ambitions so please be as generous as possible so that the current generation of Student Rugby League players can benefit.
Best wishes,
Niel Wood
Director of Student Rugby League
